Christian Group Sues Seattle After Mayor Blames Them for Violence
November 28th, 2025

A significant number of protests have erupted across the United States for various reasons over the last few years, and Seattle has certainly seen its fair share of people expressing their First Amendment rights. Mayors of various cities have reacted to these protests in different ways, and the Mayor of Seattle has allegedly chosen to blame one Christian group for the issues his city experienced this past spring. In response, the Christian group has decided to sue the city for religious discrimination. What exactly is going on here?
Christian Group organized anti-LGBTQ+ Rally in Seattle that Turned Violent
The Christian group “On Fire Ministries” stopped in Seattle last spring as part of a multi-city tour to “stand for biblical values.” The Christian group is known for being anti-abortion and anti-LGBTQ+ rights. The group secured a permit to protest in Cal Anderson Park, which is in the epicenter of the city’s LGBTQ+ community. Needless to say, the rally did not go well. LGBTQ+ supporters and other counterprotesters attended the rally, and violence ensued. Many people were arrested, and numerous law enforcement officers were assaulted and injured.
At the time, the Mayor of Seattle seemed to blame the violence on “anarchists” who joined the counterprotesters unexpectedly. The event in question was approved by the city, and observers questioned the logic of allowing the rally to unfold in a park named after the first openly gay legislator in Washington’s history.
AOL reports that counterprotestors threw urine-filled water balloons at those who attended this faith-based event. The Seattle Police Department backed up these reports, with officials saying that they personally witnessed the counterprotestors hurling the water balloons into the crowd.
The Christian Group Files A Lawsuit
The lawsuit stems from the Mayor’s alleged comments after the dust settled. Specifically, he has been accused of blaming the Christian group for starting the violence, when reports seem to indicate that this was not the case. The Christians also note that the rally was only held in the park because the city had denied their request to hold the event in a different location.
As a result of the mayor’s comments and the general manner in which they were treated, the Christian group has decided to sue the city. The plaintiffs claim that they were specifically targeted, condemned, and silenced by the city, specifically because of their faith. This, they claim, goes against the First Amendment and other aspects of the United States Constitution.
The purpose of this lawsuit is to prevent further censorship, the group argues. If they do not take this legal action, the city might prevent faith-based events in the future. At least, this is their logic. They are also hoping to receive compensation for the damages they’ve endured.
The city has responded by stating that they do not discriminate against people based on their faith, although it did not comment on this specific litigation.
